I have a dream…

On Planet Metaphor there exist a bipedal species called the Boofie. Boofies are complex creatures who have multiplied to over 6 billion. Despite existing in such large numbers, no two Boofie are the same. Can you imagine the vast amount of variables, the sheer complexity, involved in that? Six billion Boofies, all of them unique and individual! It’s really amazing. I imagine you’ve figured out that I’m talking about Humans. If not, I just told you.

The world is a complicated place, and I suspect that we actually don’t understand our own reality, at least not completely. A simple world-view makes life easier. A simplified explanation for everything is comforting. Simple classifications and rules for governing all that is make life undemanding and pleasant. If only things actually were simple.
Like America in the 1950s, for example. All the men looked like this, and all the women, who stayed at home to cook and clean, looked like this. The men worked all day, and were the masters of the house (which included a wife, a husband, a boy and girl child, and maybe a pet). Yes the world was simpler then, and it all would still be fine except that Humans just don’t fit into America’s overly simplified 1950s worldview.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

There have been movements and generations since then which have made the worldview far less simple, and thus more accurate to the way things really are.
But the worldview is still too simple.
Gender, race, sexuality, etc. are all roles that Humans don’t always fit into. This is among the greatest sources of conflict in the world.

It’s likely many of you stopped reading after the r-word because you don’t like to think or read about race, but this is the exciting part: there’s no such thing.
Race doesn’t exist.

We have mapped the human genome. There is no genetic basis for race. Scientifically speaking, race does not exist. It’s merely another thing we Humans have invented to simplify our world. Like the Tooth Fairy. Or Santa Claus. (If “race” does exist, it is not as a black/white dichotemy, but as a spectrum, a complex gradient of gene groups, where certain characteristics tend to be grouped together with other characteristics, to varying degrees.)

Perhaps it’s time for a new view of the world? There are no races. There are only billions of individuals on this planet, each one of us unique. Six billion plus individuals not categorized by artificial categories like race. Welcome to the new paradigm (you can tell I went to Hampshire) where each of us, each of six billion, is judged solely by the content of our character, because there isn’t anything else to judge.

Planet Metaphor is really complex, as are Boofies. Their worldview ought to reflect that and not try to oversimplify it.
