Hunger Games Fandom Is Odd

13 Aug

So I guess I want to go left or right then, yes?

Look, I like The Hunger Games.  It’s a great series.  It is not about a happy place.  There is no reason to fantasize about actually going there.  Why would you ever want to do that?  Do you really want to live in a world where you might have to eat your cat?  Or kill your sister?  Or be killed by your lover?  The whole point of the series is how inhumane and awful the whole of Panem is.

Maybe this sign is a warning.  “Turn Back” it says.

Also, which direction to Camp Half-Blood?

Perks of Being a Reader

1 Jul

Finished reading The Perks Of Being A Wallflower the other day.  Absolutely fantastic book.  I wanted to turn around and read it again right away.  It is just so full of delicious quotes and fantastic everythings.  Would that I could write as well as “Charlie.”  It felt a bit Good Will Hunting-ish near the end, but it still worked for me.  We’ll see how the movie plays out.

The trailer for the movie is better after having read the book, but it’s a good trailer either way.  It looks amazingly accurate to the book, which I think is impressive since the book is all letters (like, the kind you send in the mail) and it’s hard to do a movie that way.  Then again it’s written and directed by Stephen Chbosky, the author of the book, so it will be hard to find fault in the adaptation.  Plus it has Hermione and Percy Jackson in it, both looking nothing like Hermione or Percy Jackson, so that’s good.

Only thing is… this comes out in a few months!  Why is there only one trailer?

The Odds

And in a new attempt to take over the world, Young Adult Fiction has managed to have the Hunger Games DVD and Blu-Ray enter the world on Percy Jackson’s birthday. Clever.

Nice trailer too, but I wish that it showed more of what the special features will be (and I wish that they had used a tripod when shooting).  I mean, I’ve seen the movie already, and seeing clips from it again is exciting, but I want to see new things: show me behind-the-scenes clips.  Show me Jennifer Lawrence going into and out of character.  Show me clips of the writers talking about why they did what they did.  Give me wild claims about the excessive number of hours of extras included.  I like those things.

**Update: Nice ending, Percy.  Sorry about the girl though.  I mean, I guess Percy is happy about it, so that’s ok.  But you know me.  I hate when pretty girls turn into trees.  And I was wondering if the immortals were ever going to evolve.  I mean, they were originally conceived to reflect the weaknesses and foibles of humanity, but if humanity has evolved, the Olympians should too… and we have evolved, right?

I’m not quite done with the series yet (about to start the fifth and final book) but i’ve enjoyed them all so far.

While Annabeth is neat, and who wouldn’t love a grey-eyed daughter of Athena? (and heck, I’m more-or-less a son of Athena, so I would know,) I’m pretty sure Rachel is where it’s at.  My vote would of course be for the three of them to go poly and live together in a half-blood/mortal love triangle.  Maybe that can be a third series of books, about the three of them and their children.

If two half-bloods have kids, are they quarter-bloods?
